Cocoa Notes collects nothing. This page explains what that means in practice, and what the few exceptions are.

Cocoa Notes has no account, no server and no analytics. The App Store privacy label for this app reads Data Not Collected, and this page exists to explain exactly what sits behind that phrase.
What Cocoa Notes collects
Nothing.
The app does not create an account, does not ask for an email address, does not contain analytics or crash-reporting code, does not use advertising or tracking identifiers, and makes no network requests containing anything you write.
There is no Cocoa Notes server. There is nowhere for your notes to be sent.
Where your notes actually are
When you first open Cocoa Notes you choose a folder — on this Mac, or in iCloud Drive. Every note is written there as a plain Markdown (.md) text file, in a normal folder you can open in Finder at any time.
A few supporting things are kept on your Mac, outside that folder, in ~/Library/Application Support/CocoaNotes/:
- A search index (SQLite). Disposable — it is rebuilt from your notes and contains nothing that is not already in them.
- Version snapshots, so you can restore an earlier version of a note.
- Daily backups, the last seven, as zip files.
All of it stays on your Mac. None of it is transmitted anywhere.
If you use iCloud Drive
Choosing to keep your notes folder in iCloud Drive means Apple syncs those files between your Macs, the same way it syncs any other document you put there. That is a transfer between you and Apple under Apple's privacy policy, not something Cocoa Notes does or can see. The app just writes files to a folder; macOS does the rest.
You can choose to keep everything on this Mac instead, and then nothing leaves the computer at all.
Purchases
Cocoa Pro is an in-app purchase handled entirely by Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment and tells the app whether the unlock is active. We never see your name, email address, payment details or country. We receive only anonymous aggregate sales figures from Apple, the same as any developer.
The AI feature does not use AI
Cocoa Notes includes a "Write with AI" feature. It is a set of prompts you copy to your clipboard and paste into ChatGPT, Claude or whatever assistant you use, yourself, in that other app.
Cocoa Notes contains no AI, calls no AI service, and sends nothing anywhere. Whatever you then choose to paste into someone else's assistant is between you and them, under their privacy policy.
Optional things that touch the network
Two features can reach outside the app, and only when you use them:
- Web links in your notes open in your browser when you click them, like any link anywhere.
- Handoff passes the open note between your own Macs through Apple's Continuity, if you have it enabled in macOS.
Your rights
Because nothing is collected, there is no data to request, correct, export or delete. Your notes are already yours: they are files in your folder. To delete everything, delete the folder and, if you also want to remove the index and backups, ~/Library/Application Support/CocoaNotes/.
Children
Cocoa Notes is rated 4+ and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If this ever changes — if some future version gains a service that genuinely needs a server — this page will be updated with a new date, the App Store privacy label will change, and the app will tell you in the release notes before anything different happens. No change will apply retroactively to notes you have already written.
