Email gets a reply. Before you write, the answer to most questions is in the guide or below.
One person reads this, so expect a reply within a couple of days rather than a couple of minutes. It helps enormously if you include:
- Your macOS version — Apple menu › About This Mac
- The Cocoa Notes version — Cocoa Notes › About Cocoa Notes
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
- A screenshot, if it is something you can see
Before you write
The user guide covers every screen in the app across sixteen chapters, and Troubleshooting and FAQ is the last one. Most questions are answered there in more detail than an email reply would give.
The questions that come up most
Where are my notes?
In the folder you chose the first time you opened the app. File › Reveal in Finder opens it. Every note is an ordinary .md text file — you can open, copy or back them up like any other document.
Is Cocoa Notes finished?
It is a public TestFlight beta. It is usable for a real semester of notes — that is what it is being used for — but it has not been through hundreds of hands yet. Everything is unlocked and free while the beta lasts.
Will it stay free?
The notebook will, always. What changes at launch is that Cocoa Pro — the study engine: recall scheduling, quizzes, exams, collection export — becomes a one-time $19.99 purchase. It will never be a subscription, and your notes stay readable either way, because they are just files.
Can I use Cocoa Notes on my iPad or iPhone?
Not yet. Cocoa Notes is a Mac app and requires macOS 14 or later. There is no iPad or iPhone version today. An iPad version is planned — it is a real intention rather than a maybe — but nothing has been built and there is no date.
Does it sync?
Between Macs, yes — put your notes folder in iCloud Drive and every Mac you sign in on sees the same notes. There is no Cocoa Notes sync service and no account. The search index stays on each Mac separately, which is deliberate.
Can I write by hand or use an Apple Pencil?
No. Cocoa Notes is for typed notes. You can add pictures, scans and photos taken with an iPhone via Continuity Camera.
I bought Cocoa Pro and it is asking me to buy it again
On the same Apple Account, choose Cocoa Notes › Restore Purchases. If that does not work, email with the date of purchase and it will get sorted out.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple, not through us — reportaproblem.apple.com. If the app did not do what this website said it does, email anyway, because that is a problem worth knowing about.
Is there a student discount?
The notebook is free with no limit on how much you write, and Cocoa Pro is a one-time $19.99 rather than a subscription. There is no separate student price; App Store pricing already adjusts by country.
A note changed on disk and now there is an orange bar
Something outside Cocoa edited that file — another editor, or iCloud finishing a sync. The bar offers Show Difference, Use Theirs and Keep Mine, so nothing is lost either way. Chapter 16 of the guide explains it.
Something is wrong and I want to tell you
Please do. Cocoa Notes collects no telemetry at all, which means nobody finds out about a bug unless a person writes in. A two-line email about something small is genuinely useful.
Requesting a feature
Also welcome by email. It helps to describe the problem you ran into rather than the solution you have in mind — the underlying problem is usually the more useful half, and sometimes there is already a way to do it.
