Cocoa Notes vs Notion

Where Notion wins, honestly

• Databases. Nothing in Cocoa Notes comes close. Relations, rollups, filtered views, a table that is also a board that is also a calendar — that is Notion's whole reason to exist and it is genuinely excellent.
• Collaboration. Shared pages, comments, permissions, real-time editing. Cocoa Notes has none of this by design; it is a single-person notebook.
• Every platform, plus the web. Cocoa Notes is macOS only.
• Notion Plus is free for students with a school email, which is a serious offer.

If you run a group project, a club, or a shared wiki, use Notion. This comparison is not going to talk you out of it.

Where Cocoa Notes wins

Your notes are files, and they stay readable

Notion notes live in Notion. You can export them, and the export is genuinely decent, but the working copy is on someone else's server in a proprietary block format. A Notion page is not a file you can open.

Cocoa writes plain Markdown into a folder you pick — on your Mac or in iCloud Drive. Open it in Finder and every note is a .md file you can read in TextEdit. There is no account to sign into and no server involved. The App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected, and that is literal: the app has no analytics and no network calls for your content.

This matters more than it sounds like it does at 2am in week 14, when you need your notes and the wifi in the library is not cooperating.

It works offline, properly

Notion's offline support has improved, but it is a cloud app that caches. Cocoa has no online mode to fall back from. Everything is local, always, and nothing is ever "loading".

Speed

A Notion page is a web app rendering blocks. Cocoa is a native Swift app drawing text into a paginated document. On the same Mac, opening a long note is not a comparable experience.

The study engine

This is the real gap. In Notion, highlighting text makes it a colour. Nothing happens after that.

In Cocoa Notes a highlighter has a name — Formulas, Terminology, Dates, On the Exam — and every mark you make is collected under that name across your whole course. Those same marks become flashcards, recall sessions, quizzes and exams, without you writing a single card.

Students who use Notion for study usually end up with a second tool for it: Notion for notes, Anki or Quizlet for cards, and a manual re-typing step in between. Cocoa's argument is that the re-typing step should not exist, because the highlighting already told the computer what mattered.

Cost over a degree

Notion's student offer is the stronger deal while you are a student. The thing to look at is the year you graduate and the free plan ends.

Moving your notes across

Cocoa imports a Notion export directly. In Notion, choose Export and pick Markdown & CSV, unzip it, then in Cocoa choose File › Import and point it at the folder. Your pages arrive as notes, in a folder you choose, and from that moment they are files on your disk.

What does not come across: databases, relations and views — those have no equivalent in Cocoa and are the main reason to keep a Notion account alongside it. Plenty of people do exactly that: Notion for the group project, Cocoa for the lecture notes they have to learn.
